Remembering Dolores

Picture
Dolores Sancetta-Dioguardi passed away November 19, 2023 at her home following a lunch celebrating her almost 95th birthday on Nov. 21, 2023.  The article in Stroll Magazine ran as it was originally written prior to her passing and is a wonderful Tribute to this very special person.

What famous celebrity did this Jupiter woman represent?

Dolores Dioguardi is an expert in reinvention. In her 89 years, she’s been a Long Island housewife, a movie extra, a talent agent for up-and-coming actors, including a certain “Mission: Impossible” and “Top Gun” star (yes, that one), a champion club golfer and a second-time blushing bride in her 60s.

And now, she and her 97-year-old husband Philip want to reinvent the way America makes its beds - and as with everything else Dolores has done, she intends to see it through. Call it her own impossible mission.

“It”s wonderful at this age to find out that you still have something to do,” says Dioguardi, in the office of her Jupiter home, holding the very first template that Philip made out of a piece of cardboard for The Tucker, a simple-looking hand-held tool that allows the user to tuck in a fitted or flat sheet without ever lifting the mattress.

An invention called The Tucker, a boon to bed-makers everywhere, hinged on the broken fingernail of its designer.“I broke a nail, and hurt my hand making the bed one day, so I told my husband there has to be a better way,” said Dolores Dioguardi.

The perky 89-year-old says that at any age, “It’s hard to lift a ridiculously heavy mattress while trying to tuck a sheet under it at the same time.” She’s an admitted neat-freak and takes time from busy days at her new company and from playing golf to make her beds every day.  “I’ve read all these comments from people who laugh about making beds. “‘Who takes the time and who cares?’” she quoted.

She laughs. “I do. I am very fussy about a tidy house. We always make our bed. I believe in the old saying, ‘Messy house: messy head.’ And it’s true. It’s so much more pleasant to work in a neat and tidy space.”

She and her husband, Philip, set out to invent a sheet-tucking implement...
